We recently had the pleasure of working with Nightsafe again, following the previous project for the BBC DIY SOS Big Build, on their new house renovation project in Darwen.
Nightsafe are a local Charity set up in 1990 by a group of local people, with the aim of alleviating the plight of homeless and vulnerably housed young people within the borough of Blackburn with Darwen and surrounding areas. The Nightsafe charity works with young people who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness and will provide accommodation, day centres with information, advice and guidance.
Twelve months ago, a generous benefactor gifted a house in Anchor Avenue, Darwen to Nightsafe. The reason behind the donation was to provide safe accommodation and support for 6 young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The original design concept was provided by Heather and Phillip German, of My Vinteriors, and they have been on hand throughout the renovation to provide advice and support.
Local artist Alexandra Gallagher also created and donated a bespoke piece of artwork for the dining room.
During the renovation Nightsafe had support from local businesses and volunteers, gifting them personal time and or resources and funds to purchase household furnishings. At Great Harwood Windows along with our partner Endurance Doors we supplied and installed two new composite doors to complement the properties’ design and provide security.
What once was a tired and run down property has been transformed into a modern, bright house ready for its new occupants to make their home.
On Friday (16th Dec) the doors of Anchor Avenue finally opened and those who have supported the project were invited to come and look around, and they couldn’t believe what had been achieved.
Nightsafe CEO Jan Larkin said: “It never ceases to amaze me what can be achieved when a community comes together. We have been so well supported by volunteers who have given up evenings and weekends and even taken time off to help us get together the most amazing home for six young people. Never more needed, Anchor Avenue is a warm and welcoming bright space in the heart of a lovely community, built with love”
